About the position

The Outside Sales Representative at Builders FirstSource is a pivotal role that requires a deep understanding of customer needs and the ability to effectively represent the company to its largest and most complex customers. This position is designed for individuals who possess in-depth knowledge, experience, and skills in sales, marketing, and customer service. The representative will be responsible for identifying customer requirements and matching them with the appropriate products and services offered by the company. This role also involves a leadership component, where the representative will help train and develop less experienced sales staff, and may act as the Sales Manager in their absence. In this role, the Outside Sales Representative will engage in various essential duties and responsibilities. They will represent the company during the sales process by collecting data on customer needs and design specifications, acting as a liaison between the inside technical/design staff and the customer to develop sales proposals. The representative will handle complex customer requirements, develop sales contracts for a range of projects including residential, multi-family, and commercial, and troubleshoot field issues that may arise. They will also conduct sales presentations, design professional demonstrations of company products, and continuously update customers on new products and services. The representative will be expected to research and solicit new customers, generate sales opportunities, and enhance their knowledge of sales techniques and product offerings through company-sponsored training programs. They will prepare reports and documentation for management and participate in safety meetings to ensure compliance with safety procedures. This position requires a proactive approach to work efficiency and productivity, as well as a commitment to maintaining a positive company image through professionalism and effective communication.

Responsibilities

  • Collect data on customer needs and design specifications during the sales process.
  • Act as a liaison between inside technical/design staff and customers to develop sales proposals.
  • Handle complex or highly specialized customer requirements effectively.
  • Develop sales contracts for residential, multi-family, and commercial projects by gathering specification information from clients.
  • Troubleshoot complex field issues that may arise during projects.
  • Plan and conduct sales presentations for current and prospective customers.
  • Design professional demonstrations or presentations of company products and services.
  • Research, identify, and solicit new customers to generate sales opportunities.
  • Continuously update customers on products and services and explain how they meet current or future requirements.
  • Participate in a leadership role, such as chairing meetings and training less experienced sales staff.
  • Prepare recurring and special reports for management as required.
  • Enhance knowledge of sales techniques and product knowledge by attending training programs.
  • Plan and pace work efficiency to meet productivity goals.
  • Understand and observe all safety procedures to prevent injury to self or coworkers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Sales, Marketing, or a related field.
  • Two years of prior sales experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of company products, services, and production processes.
  • Understanding of policies and procedures relating to sales and customer service.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding sensitive information.
  • Demonstrated professionalism, diplomacy, and tact.
  • Highly effective selling and presentation skills.
  • Ability to achieve aggressive sales goals and objectives.
  • Strong time management and prioritization skills.
  • Well-developed interpersonal and influencing skills.
  • Attention to detail and proficiency in Office Suite.
  • Valid driver's license.
