About the position

As an Outside Sales Representative at Builders FirstSource, you will play a crucial role in representing the company to our largest and most complex customers. Your primary responsibility will be to understand customer needs and identify the appropriate products and services to meet those requirements. This position requires a deep knowledge of our offerings and the ability to effectively communicate and demonstrate how our solutions can fulfill customer expectations. You will also participate in a leadership capacity, helping to train and develop less experienced sales staff, and may act as the Sales Manager in their absence. In this role, you will be responsible for collecting data on customer needs and design specifications, acting as a liaison between the customer and our inside technical/design staff to develop tailored sales proposals. You will develop sales contracts for a variety of projects, including residential, multi-family, and commercial, by gathering specification information from clients' engineers or architects and communicating any changes to our technical staff and management. Additionally, you will troubleshoot complex field issues and conduct effective sales presentations to current and prospective customers, showcasing our products and services in a professional manner. Your responsibilities will also include researching and identifying new customers, generating sales opportunities through a thorough understanding of client needs and industry competition, and continuously updating customers on our products and services. You will prepare reports and documentation for management as required and enhance your sales techniques and product knowledge by attending company-sponsored training programs. Safety is paramount, and you will be expected to understand and observe all safety procedures to prevent injuries in the workplace. This position may also involve carrying out other duties as assigned, contributing to a dynamic and collaborative work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Represents the company during the sales process by collecting data on customer needs and design specifications.
  • Acts as a liaison between inside technical/design staff and customers in developing sales proposals.
  • Develops sales contracts for a wide range of projects, including residential, multi-family, and commercial.
  • Troubleshoots field issues which may be difficult to resolve or are complex in nature.
  • Plans and conducts sales presentations for current and prospective customers.
  • Designs professional demonstrations or presentations of company products and services.
  • Researches, identifies, and solicits new customers.
  • Generates sales opportunities through research on client needs and industry competition.
  • Continuously updates customers on products and services and explains how they meet current or future requirements.
  • Participates in a leadership role, such as chairing meetings and helping train less experienced sales staff.
  • Prepares recurring and special reports, forms, or other documentation for management as required.
  • Enhances knowledge of sales techniques and expands product and industry knowledge by attending training programs.
  • Plans and paces own work efficiency to meet productivity goals.
  • Understands and observes all safety procedures and practices.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Sales, Marketing, or related field plus two (2) years prior sales experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of company products, services, production processes, and product standards.
  • In-depth understanding of policies and procedures relating to sales and customer service.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding sensitive information.
  • Demonstrated professionalism, diplomacy, and tact.
  • Highly effective selling skills and ability to achieve aggressive sales goals.
  • Highly effective presentation skills, including the ability to present complex subject matter to a non-expert audience.
  • Ability to prioritize work, manage time effectively, and work unsupervised.
  • Well-developed interpersonal and influencing skills.
  • Ability to provide training and development to less experienced Outside Sales Reps.
  • Attention to detail and proficiency in Office Suite.
  • Valid driver's license.
