About the position

At BFS, an Outside Sales Representative plays a crucial role in representing the company to its largest and most complex customers. This position requires a deep understanding of customer needs and the ability to identify appropriate products and services to meet those requirements. The representative acts as a liaison between the inside technical/design staff and customers, ensuring that sales proposals are developed effectively and accurately. This role is not just about selling; it involves troubleshooting complex field issues, conducting professional sales presentations, and continuously updating customers on the latest products and services that align with their current and future needs. The Outside Sales Representative is responsible for developing sales contracts for a variety of projects, including residential, multi-family, and commercial. This involves collecting specification information from the client's engineer or architect and communicating any needs or changes to the technical staff and management. The representative must also engage in research to identify and solicit new customers, generating sales opportunities through a thorough understanding of client needs and industry competition. In addition to sales responsibilities, this role may involve leadership duties, such as chairing meetings and acting in the Sales Manager's capacity during their absence. The representative may also provide training to less experienced sales staff, enhancing their knowledge of sales techniques and product offerings. Regular reporting and documentation for management are also part of the job, along with a commitment to personal development through company-sponsored training programs. The ability to plan and pace work efficiently to meet productivity goals is essential for success in this role.

Responsibilities

  • Represents the company during the sales process by collecting data on customer needs and design specifications.
  • Acts as a liaison between inside technical/design staff and customers in developing sales proposals.
  • Develops sales contracts for a wide range of projects, including residential, multi-family, and commercial.
  • Troubleshoots field issues which may be difficult to resolve or are complex in nature.
  • Effectively plans and conducts sales presentations for current and prospective customers.
  • Designs professional demonstrations or presentations of company products and services.
  • Researches, identifies, and solicits new customers.
  • Generates sales opportunities through research on client needs and industry competition.
  • Continuously updates customers on products and services and explains how they meet current or future requirements.
  • Participates in a leadership role, such as chairing meetings and acting in the Sales Manager's capacity during their absence.
  • May provide training to less experienced Outside Sales Reps.
  • Prepares recurring and special reports, forms, or other documentation for management as required.
  • Enhances knowledge of sales techniques and expands product and industry knowledge by attending training programs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Sales, Marketing or related field plus two (2) years prior sales experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of company products, services, production processes, and product standards.
  • In-depth understanding of policies and procedures relating to sales and customer service.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding sensitive information.
  • Demonstrated professionalism, diplomacy, and tact.
  • Highly effective selling skills and ability to achieve aggressive sales goals.
  • Highly effective presentation skills, including the ability to present complex subject matter to a non-expert audience.
  • Ability to prioritize work, manage time effectively, and work unsupervised.
  • Well-developed interpersonal and influencing skills.
  • Ability to provide training and development to less experienced Outside Sales Reps.
  • Attention to detail and proficiency in Office Suite.
  • Valid driver's license.
