About the position

The Outside Sales Representative at Matheson Tri-Gas is responsible for selling products to business and industrial establishments or individuals. This role involves a variety of tasks aimed at generating sales and maintaining customer relationships. The representative will compile lists of prospective customers from various sources, including newspapers, business directories, and trade shows, to identify potential leads. They will travel throughout their assigned territory to engage with both regular and prospective customers, soliciting orders and discussing products either in person or over the phone. In addition to direct sales activities, the representative will demonstrate products using samples or catalogs, highlighting their features to potential customers. They will be responsible for quoting prices and credit terms, preparing sales contracts, and estimating delivery dates based on the company's production and delivery schedules. The role also requires the preparation of reports on business transactions and maintaining accurate expense accounts. Collaboration is key in this position, as the representative will work closely with inside sales and route sales representatives to ensure that account activities and literature are current. They will also coordinate customer training and enter new customer data into the computer database. Building and maintaining relationships with purchasing contacts is essential, as is the ability to investigate and resolve customer issues related to welding processes, equipment, and deliveries. The representative will also attend trade shows, perform inside sales when necessary, assist with semi-annual inventories, and help co-workers and customers with technical welding questions. Additionally, they will assist in collecting outstanding account balances and undertake other projects and duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Compiles lists of prospective customers for use as sales leads.
  • Travels throughout assigned territory to call on regular and prospective customers to solicit orders.
  • Displays or demonstrates product, using samples or catalog, and emphasizes salable features.
  • Quotes prices and credit terms and prepares sales contracts for orders obtained.
  • Estimates date of delivery to customer, based on knowledge of own firm's production and delivery schedules.
  • Prepares reports of business transactions and keeps expense accounts.
  • Works with inside sales and route sales representatives to keep account activities and literature up to date.
  • Coordinates customer training.
  • Enters new customer data and other sales data for current customers into computer database.

Requirements

  • 2-5+ years of experience in Industrial Sales, preferably in Gases/Medical Gases/Propane and Welding supply sales.
  • A proven track record in sales and account management and development.
  • Profit and loss analysis on proposed sales orders and understanding of profit margins.
  • Experience making sales presentations and demonstrations.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent from a four-year college or related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.
