About the position

The Outside Sales Representative at Builders FirstSource is a pivotal role that requires a deep understanding of the company's products and services, as well as the ability to effectively represent the company to its largest and most complex customers. This position is not only about sales; it involves understanding customer needs, identifying suitable products and services, and acting as a liaison between the customer and the internal technical/design staff. The representative will be responsible for developing sales proposals that meet the specific requirements of various projects, including residential, multi-family, and commercial developments. This role also includes troubleshooting complex field issues and conducting professional sales presentations to both current and prospective customers. In addition to direct sales responsibilities, the Outside Sales Representative will participate in leadership activities, such as training and developing less experienced sales staff, and may act as the Sales Manager in their absence. The representative will be expected to continuously update customers on new products and services, ensuring that they are informed about how these offerings can meet their current and future needs. This position requires a proactive approach to generating sales opportunities through research and effective demonstrations of the company's products. The role also involves preparing various reports and documentation for management, enhancing personal knowledge of sales techniques, and attending company-sponsored training programs. Safety is a priority, and the representative must adhere to all safety procedures to prevent injuries. Overall, this position is designed for a motivated individual who can manage their own work efficiency to meet productivity goals while contributing to the overall success of the sales team.

Responsibilities

  • Represents the company during the sales process by collecting data on customer needs and design specifications, acting as a liaison between inside technical/design staff and customers.
  • Develops sales contracts for a wide range of projects by collecting specification information from the client's engineer or architect and conveying needs to technical staff and management.
  • Troubleshoots complex field issues that may be difficult to resolve.
  • Plans and conducts sales presentations for current and prospective customers, designing professional demonstrations of company products and services.
  • Researches, identifies, and solicits new customers, generating sales opportunities through effective demonstrations of the company's products.
  • Continuously updates customers on products and services, explaining how they meet current or future requirements.
  • Participates in a leadership role, such as chairing meetings and helping train less experienced sales staff.
  • Prepares recurring and special reports, forms, or other documentation for management as required.
  • Enhances knowledge of sales techniques and expands product knowledge by attending training programs and may serve as a presenter.
  • Plans and paces own work efficiency to meet productivity goals.
  • Understands and observes all safety procedures to prevent injury and may recommend changes to improve safety procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Sales, Marketing, or related field plus two (2) years prior sales experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of company products, services, production processes, and product standards.
  • In-depth understanding of policies and procedures relating to sales and customer service.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding sensitive information.
  • Demonstrated professionalism, diplomacy, and tact.
  • Highly effective selling and presentation skills.
  • Ability to achieve aggressive sales goals and objectives.
  • Ability to prioritize work, manage time effectively, and work unsupervised.
  • Well-developed interpersonal and influencing skills.
  • Attention to detail and proficiency in Office Suite.
  • Valid driver's license.
