About the position

The Outside Sales Representative at Builders FirstSource plays a crucial role in representing the company to its largest and most complex customers. This position requires a deep understanding of customer needs and the ability to identify suitable products and services to meet those requirements. The representative will engage in a leadership capacity, assisting in the training and development of less experienced sales staff, and may temporarily assume the role of Sales Manager in their absence. In this role, the representative will be responsible for collecting data on customer needs and design specifications, acting as a liaison between the inside technical/design staff and the customer to develop tailored sales proposals. They will develop sales contracts for a variety of projects, including residential, multi-family, and commercial, by gathering specification information from the client's engineer or architect and communicating any needs or changes to the technical staff and management. The representative will also troubleshoot complex field issues, conduct effective sales presentations, and design professional demonstrations of the company's products and services. They will be tasked with researching and soliciting new customers, generating sales opportunities through a thorough understanding of client needs and industry competition. Continuous communication with customers regarding product updates and how these products meet their current or future requirements is essential. Additionally, the representative will prepare reports and documentation for management, enhance their sales techniques and product knowledge through company-sponsored training programs, and may serve as a presenter at these training sessions. They are expected to manage their work efficiency to meet productivity goals while adhering to safety procedures to prevent injuries. Other duties may be assigned as necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Represents the company during the sales process by collecting data on customer needs and design specifications, acting as a liaison between inside technical/design staff and customer.
  • Develops sales contracts for a wide range of projects, including residential, multi-family and commercial, by collecting specification information from the client's engineer or architect.
  • Troubleshoots field issues which may be difficult to resolve or are complex in nature.
  • Effectively plans and conducts sales presentations for current and prospective customers.
  • Designs professional demonstrations or presentations of company products and services and provides clarification on how we can meet their specific needs.
  • Researches, identifies and solicits new customers, generating sales opportunities through research on client needs and industry competition.
  • Continuously updates customers on products and services and provides explanations on how these products meet current or future customer requirements.
  • Participates in a leadership role, such as chairing meetings and helping train and develop less experienced members of the sales staff.
  • Prepares recurring and special reports, forms or other documentation for management, as required.
  • Enhances knowledge of sales techniques and expands product and industry knowledge by attending company-sponsored training programs.
  • Plans and paces own work efficiency in order to meet daily, weekly, project or team-related productivity goals.
  • Understands and observes all safety procedures and practices to prevent injury to self or coworkers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Sales, Marketing or related field plus two (2) years prior sales experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of company products, services, production processes and product standards.
  • In-depth understanding of policies and procedures relating to sales and customer service.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding sensitive information.
  • Demonstrated professionalism, diplomacy and tact to portray the company positively.
  • Highly effective selling skills and ability to achieve aggressive sales goals and objectives.
  • Highly effective presentation skills, including the ability to present complex subject matter to a non-expert audience.
  • Ability to prioritize work, manage time effectively and work unsupervised.
  • Well-developed interpersonal and influencing skills, including the ability to interact effectively with various levels within customer organizations.
  • Ability to utilize background and experience to provide training and development to less experienced Outside Sales Reps.
  • Attention to detail and proficiency in Office Suite.
  • Valid driver's license.
