About the position

The Outside Sales Representative at Olympic Steel is a pivotal role responsible for managing the sales and marketing efforts within an assigned territory that includes Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota. This position requires a proactive approach, utilizing frequent, direct face-to-face contact with clients to ensure high levels of customer satisfaction. The representative will employ a consultative sales strategy to identify and act upon selling opportunities that promise maximum potential and profitability. In this role, the Outside Sales Representative will be tasked with developing new accounts while also nurturing and maintaining strong relationships with established customers. This involves understanding customer needs and providing tailored solutions that align with their requirements. Additionally, the representative will be responsible for creating annual sales forecasts and implementing strategic plans to meet revenue and volume targets. Collaboration with Inside Sales Representatives is essential to ensure that customers receive high-quality service, including timely delivery of products according to their specifications. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in sales, particularly within the steel service industry, and will be expected to demonstrate a solid understanding of steel products and general business practices. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, are crucial for success in this role, as is proficiency in Microsoft Office applications. The position also requires a willingness to travel as needed, which may include air and land travel, and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team. Community engagement and customer interactions may necessitate working outside of regular business hours, including nights and weekends.

Responsibilities

  • Manage overall sales and marketing efforts within assigned territory.
  • Utilize direct face-to-face contact to ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Identify and act upon selling opportunities for maximum profit.
  • Develop new accounts and maintain relationships with existing customers.
  • Create annual forecasts and implement strategies to achieve revenue targets.
  • Collaborate with Inside Sales Representatives to ensure high-quality service.
  • Formulate sales quotes and proposals for customers.
  • Participate in community and customer engagements as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Marketing, Engineering, or equivalent sales experience in the steel industry.
  • 3+ years of related work experience in sales and customer service, preferably in a steel service environment.
  • Ability to develop new account relationships and expand business with existing customers.
  • Knowledge of steel products and general business acumen.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to travel by air and land as required by the position.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Effective negotiation skills and ability to educate customers about products and services.
