About the position

As an Outside Sales Representative at Carter Lumber, your primary focus will be on creating and maintaining strong relationships within the building materials industry. This role is crucial as the industry is currently experiencing significant growth, and your ability to connect and communicate effectively will be key to your success. You will be working for a multi-billion-dollar company that has a rich history, having been founded in 1932 by W.E. Carter. Over the past 90 years, Carter Lumber has expanded from a single lumberyard in Akron, Ohio, to a family-owned company with seven brands servicing professional builders and homeowners across thirteen states and more than 160 locations. Despite this growth, the company remains committed to its core values of honesty, hard work, and a people-first culture. In this position, you will collaborate with various departments, including the Yard and dispatch office, middle management, and market Vice Presidents. Your responsibilities will include finding and completing sales of the full line of building materials and installed services to local contractors, builders, and remodelers. While you will be involved in selling projects, it is equally important to manage the job and maintain the relationship with your clients once a sale is made. This includes collecting and updating information on your customers' product usage and trends, visiting job sites as necessary, maintaining schedules, and addressing any issues that arise. Success in this role will require proven sales strategies, a commitment to follow-through, and strong communication skills. The compensation structure includes a salary plus commission, with no limits on your earning potential.

Responsibilities

  • Create and maintain relationships with local contractors, builders, and remodelers.
  • Find and complete sales of building materials and installed services.
  • Manage jobs and relationships post-sale.
  • Collect and keep up-to-date information on customers' product use and trends.
  • Visit job sites as needed to ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Maintain schedules and address any issues that arise during projects.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in sales, either outside or inside sales.
  • Knowledge of home building basics.
  • Ability to create material estimates/quotes and special orders.
  • Experience in opening new accounts on a monthly/quarterly basis.
  • Ability to read blueprints and provide material take-off lists.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office suite.
  • Ability to work independently.
