About the position

The Protection & Control Field Services Engineer/Technician position at the Albany Transmission Maintenance Center is responsible for overseeing Protection & Control (P&C) Field Services activities in the Southern Transmission Maintenance area. The role emphasizes safety and quality, requiring the successful candidate to learn and apply switching procedures and safety measures while planning and executing projects efficiently and without service interruptions.

Responsibilities

  • Commissioning, testing, maintaining, and troubleshooting protective relaying, controls, and communication equipment.
  • Complete assigned tasks ensuring they are completed without service interruptions, including isolating equipment effectively to meet quality, schedule, and budget targets.
  • Coordinating assigned activities with multiple internal and external stakeholders.
  • Serve as first responder to investigate power interruptions and equipment alarms.
  • Develop and use safe and efficient work practices to prevent safety and operational incidents, following formal written requirements and conducting job briefings to identify and mitigate risks.
  • Isolate hazards and damaged equipment during emergencies to restore service safely and efficiently.

Requirements

  • 4-year Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, or 4-year BS Degree in Engineering Technology, or Professional Engineering License, or 2-year technical degree in electrical maintenance, or equivalent applicable experience.
  • Ability to solve problems and make decisions while managing projects with multiple priorities.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Familiarity with computer programs including Microsoft Office products (Word, Teams, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
  • Participation in callout rotation and response to outages or abnormal conditions outside of normal work schedule.

Nice-to-haves

  • P&C Field Services experience
  • Electric power utility transmission construction, maintenance, or operations experience
  • Experience related to P&C Applications, Design, Construction, Major Equipment, Project Management, etc.
  • Knowledge of 3-phase power systems, AC/DC Protection & Control Schemes, Fault Analysis
  • Familiarity with test equipment such as voltmeters, ammeters, ohmmeters, communications instruments, and computerized relay test sets.
  • Ability to communicate across multiple work groups including customers, covered employees, and leadership.
