About the position

The P&C Scrum Master Lead (RTE) at USAA plays a crucial role in facilitating Agile practices within the Portfolio Operations team. This position is responsible for optimizing the flow of value through the Agile Release Train, coaching teams, and ensuring adherence to Agile principles. The Scrum Master Lead will lead program ceremonies, drive continuous improvement, and support product owners and managers in refining the product backlog. The role emphasizes building high-performing teams and resolving impediments to progress, all while fostering a collaborative and effective Agile environment.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitates major program ceremonies across multiple development teams and coaches teams to support Agile transformation.
  • Drives continuous improvement and facilitates communication across teams to lead dependencies and remove impediments.
  • Leads efforts to resolve systemic impediments that block teams within the organization.
  • Supports and educates product owners and managers in refining the product backlog and decision-making processes.
  • Ensures effective communication within and across programs, scheduling and facilitating cross-functional meetings.
  • Acts as an Agile Subject Matter Expert (SME) to teams and management.
  • Provides leadership for the Scrum Master community of practice and mentors other Scrum Masters and Release Train Engineers.
  • Performs risk, issue, and dependency management for the program(s) and/or portfolio.
  • Drives release management practices to ensure alignment with enterprise standards.
  • Continuously assesses the team's Agile maturity and sets standards to improve velocity.
  • Collaborates with professional coaches to conduct training sessions across Agile Release Trains.
  • Resolves complex relationship conflicts among team members.
  • Understands and guides teams on technical engineering practices related to Agile.
  • Adheres to Enterprise Project Management Office (EPMO) processes and ensures compliance with risk management policies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or 4 years of related experience in lieu of a degree.
  • 8 years of experience in process improvement, project management, or program management, with at least 6 years as a Scrum Master or Release Train Engineer.
  • Authoritative knowledge of multiple Agile delivery frameworks (e.g., Kanban, Scrum, SAFe).
  • Advanced knowledge of Agile Lifecycle Management (ALM) Tools (Jira, Rally, VersionOne).
  • Experience with Agile techniques such as ATDD, TDD, BDD, Continuous Integration, and User Story Mapping.
  • Knowledge of compliance and risk management frameworks.

Nice-to-haves

  • SAFe RTE Certification.
  • 2+ years of experience as an RTE.
  • 3+ years of leadership experience overseeing offshore development teams.
  • Experience in the P&C domain.
