About the position

This position is part of the department's management team. The incumbent is directly responsible for organizing, directing, and evaluating the work of the Planner I and Planner II positions in the Department. The team's workload may include grant application and administration, subdivision review, administration and enforcement of County Ordinances, site plan review, erosion control permit review and coordination, land use planning, GIS mapping, processing citizen inquiries, communication with elected and appointed Boards, communication with other planning professionals, implementation of the County's land use plans, and a wide variety of research and planning projects.

Responsibilities

  • Organizing, directing, and evaluating the work of Planner I and Planner II positions.
  • Managing grant applications and administration.
  • Reviewing subdivisions and enforcing County Ordinances.
  • Conducting site plan reviews and erosion control permit reviews.
  • Engaging in land use planning and GIS mapping.
  • Processing citizen inquiries and communicating with elected and appointed Boards.
  • Collaborating with other planning professionals.
  • Implementing the County's land use plans and conducting various research and planning projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Planning, Geography or closely related field and 5 years of experience, OR a Master's Degree in Planning with an appropriate combination of experience and skill.
  • Ability to obtain Certified Floodplain Manager certification within 2 years of hire.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of grant management.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Project management experience.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of Windows-based programs included in Microsoft Office.

Nice-to-haves

  • Quantitative analysis skills.
  • Knowledge of census information.
  • Understanding of site plan principles and review.
  • Experience in public policy development.
  • Skills in graphics and aerial photo analysis.
  • Ability to communicate complex concepts to a lay person.
