About the position

The position involves collating, assembling, and packing kits according to National Fire Equipment System (NFES) standards. The incumbent will be responsible for ensuring accuracy in packing configurations, participating in the development of prototype kits, and handling specialized packing requirements for various materials. This role requires independent judgment in following instructions and maintaining equipment used for packaging, while also adhering to safety and regulatory standards for hazardous materials.

Responsibilities

  • Collates, assembles, inventories, and builds kits from individual components according to NFES standards.
  • Determines packing configuration and inspects items for accuracy according to kit component packing lists.
  • Participates in the development of prototype kits and packing configurations for field use.
  • Arranges, seals, and tags items requiring specialized handling.
  • Packs tools, materials, and equipment using various standard packing methods and techniques.
  • Selects appropriate packing materials based on size, type, weight, and fragility.
  • Packs items in wood, fiberboard boxes, metal containers, and cartons.
  • Makes independent judgments within the framework of instructions and accepted methods.
  • Uses and maintains various types of packaging equipment such as heat sealers and shrink wrap machines.
  • Labels materials following agency, federal, and international packing and shipping requirements.
  • Applies FIFO procedures for food and other expiring items in storage.
  • Assembles specialized kits for air transport and parachute delivery to remote sites.
  • Packs kits using protective materials to prevent damage during transport.
  • Mixes fuel and oil to correct ratios for equipment and fills fuel containers.
  • Repairs and rehabilitates fire supplies and equipment to NFES standards.
  • Researches and refers to specifications and manuals to prevent damage and preserve item lifespan.
  • Cleans fabric materials using proper techniques and temperatures.
  • Disassembles and reassembles supplies for maintenance and preservation.
  • Maintains records for special projects and monitors tool and equipment conditions.
  • Screens shipping and receiving documents to identify discrepancies.

Requirements

  • Must be a US Citizen or US National.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Ability to perform duties without more than normal supervision.
  • Technical practices related to the job.
  • Ability to interpret instructions and specifications.
  • Use of measuring instruments and maintenance of tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge of materials and safety practices.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with hazardous materials handling.
  • Familiarity with NFES standards and procedures.
  • Experience in training or supervising temporary personnel.
