About the position

This position serves as a trainee role within the legal field, focusing on the principles, methodologies, and techniques relevant to para-legal work. The Para-Legal Assistant I will support Deputy Prosecuting Attorneys in the Department by performing routine para-legal tasks. This includes applying knowledge of legal terminology and forms, understanding criminal legal processes, and utilizing principles of legal research, discovery, and fact investigation. The role also involves familiarity with rules of evidence and the conduct of court proceedings, as well as employing methods and techniques of legal research and sources of legal information. Additionally, the position requires skills in legal writing and investigative interviewing techniques. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in legal procedures and terminology, which is essential for effectively supporting attorneys in their work. The position is designed for individuals who are eager to learn and grow within the legal profession, providing an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a supportive environment. The role is full-time and temporary, with a structured schedule of 8 hours per day from Monday to Friday, located at 1060 Richards Street, Honolulu, HI 96813.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine para-legal work in support of Deputy Prosecuting Attorneys.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • Three years of legal support experience involving research, application, interpretation, or explanation of laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of legal procedures and terminology.
  • An associate's degree or certificate in a Paralegal or Legal Assistant program can substitute for the required experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Westlaw is preferred.
  • Valid Paralegal Certificate certification is a plus.
