About the position

This position is for a 1:1 support paraeducator role at North Star Elementary, assisting certificated staff with instructional and non-instructional activities for mainstream special education students. The paraeducator will instruct students individually or in small groups, monitor and document student behavior and progress, and supervise student activities. The position requires completion of the Fundamental Course of Studies and the General Paraeducator Certificate as mandated by state requirements. The paraeducator will also need to complete Right Response Training within 3-5 months of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Instructs students individually or in small groups in a variety of learning activities to promote understanding of materials presented.
  • Communicates with certificated staff concerning individual student progress and adjusts methods to meet the needs of students with disabilities.
  • Assists certificated staff in maintaining records for assessment of student progress.
  • Supervises student behavior in various settings to promote safe and appropriate behavior.
  • Assists students with interpersonal and personal skills mastery.
  • Establishes and maintains effective communication with students, staff, parents, and the public.
  • May provide physical assistance to handicapped students.
  • Monitors need for first aid for injured or ill students.
  • Alerts qualified district staff to student problems.
  • Locates, prepares, and modifies materials for student use.
  • Prepares, duplicates, collates, and distributes materials.
  • May serve on various district committees and/or departmental work teams.
  • Performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Hold a high school diploma or its equivalent.
  • Successfully passed the ETS Para Pro test or Pearson Paraprofessional assessment, or have an AA degree or higher.
  • Earned seventy-two (72) quarter credits or forty-eight (48) semester credits at an accredited institution of higher education.
  • Completion of registered apprenticeship program offered by the Washington State Dept. of Labor & Industries.
  • Successful completion of The Master Teacher Inc. Paraeducator Online Training Program.
  • Experience working with school age children and special needs students preferred.
