About the position

This position is for a Classified/Paraeducator - Instructional role at LAB (Transition Lab), a high-needs school. The paraeducator will provide 1:1 support to non-mainstreamed special education students, assisting certificated staff with both instructional and non-instructional activities. The position requires a commitment of 6.5 hours per day for 168 days per year, with additional hours for training and certification. The pay is set at $24.15 per hour according to the PSE Salary Schedule Level 5. The role may involve changes in assignment based on student needs and school enrollment variances. Candidates must meet federal minimum employment requirements and complete necessary training within specified timeframes.

Responsibilities

  • Instructs moderately to severely handicapped students individually or in small groups in a variety of learning activities.
  • Communicates with certificated staff concerning individual student progress and adjusts methods to meet diverse student needs.
  • Assists certificated staff in maintaining records for assessment of student progress.
  • Attends to student physical and safety needs, monitoring for medical risks.
  • Assists students with toileting and personal hygiene needs.
  • Helps students develop interpersonal and personal skills, including feeding and social eating skills.
  • Assists students with basic living skills and pre-vocational activities.
  • Establishes and maintains effective communication with students, staff, and parents.
  • Provides physical assistance to students and uses adaptive equipment as needed.
  • Monitors need for first aid and refers for treatment as appropriate.
  • Maintains cleanliness and hygiene of the classroom and implements equipment.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Hold a high school diploma or its equivalent.
  • Successfully passed the ETS Para Pro test or Pearson Paraprofessional assessment, or have an AA degree or higher.
  • Earned 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at an accredited institution of higher education.
  • Completion of registered apprenticeship program offered by the Washington State Dept. of Labor & Industries.
  • Successful completion of The Master Teacher Inc. Paraeducator Online Training Program.
  • Completion of Washington State Special Education core competencies for paraeducators within specified timeframes.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working with school-age children and special needs students preferred.
  • Ability to learn and implement effective behavior management techniques.
  • Knowledge of a variety of behavior and learning disorders.
