About the position

The Paraeducator position is designed for individuals who will work closely with preschool students requiring academic support in both classroom and small group settings. This role is essential in assisting certified teachers to provide effective instruction tailored to the needs of individual students or small groups. The position may be located in various educational environments, including schools, day treatment facilities, or detention centers. The Paraeducator will play a crucial role in monitoring and reporting student progress, ensuring that each child receives the necessary support to thrive academically and socially. In this role, the Paraeducator will be responsible for tutoring students, reinforcing and implementing instructional strategies as directed by the teacher. This includes maintaining detailed records of student progress and participating as a member of an instructional team, which may involve remediation efforts for students who need additional help. The Paraeducator will also prepare and organize lessons, administer and score tests, and assist in evaluating the English proficiency of students as needed. The position requires active engagement with students, including monitoring their behavior according to approved procedures and reporting on their performance. The Paraeducator will assist in various clerical duties, such as preparing instructional materials, maintaining attendance records, and operating educational equipment. Additionally, the role involves providing emotional support and guidance to students, ensuring their health and safety by adhering to established practices and regulations. The Paraeducator will also be involved in overseeing students during lab work, lunchroom activities, and playground supervision, as well as participating in emergency drills and field trips. Regular communication with teachers and parents is expected to address student needs and attendance issues. The position may require physical restraint or control of students in specific settings, emphasizing the need for a supportive and safe learning environment. Responsibilities

  • Tutor individuals or small groups of students, reinforcing and implementing instruction as directed by the teacher; maintain records of student progress.
  • Participate as a member of an instructional team including remediation teams.
  • Prepare and organize lessons as directed by the teacher; administer and score a variety of tests according to established guidelines; assist in determining English proficiency of identified students.
  • Assist in administering diagnostic and other tests; score and record test information.
  • Monitor and report behavior of students according to approved procedures; report progress regarding student performance and behavior; check and assist students with lab work as necessary.
  • Perform routine clerical duties such as preparation of instructional and classroom materials; operate copy machines; maintain classroom records; maintain attendance records.
  • Provide support to the teacher by setting up work areas, displays and exhibits, operating audio-visual equipment, operating educational training equipment and distributing and collecting paper and supplies.
  • Assist in overseeing students while in labs; provide for supplies inventory as necessary.
  • Assist students by providing proper examples, emotional support, a friendly attitude, and general guidance.
  • Confer, as needed, with teachers concerning programs and materials to meet student needs.
  • Contact parents of students who are absent; make home visits as necessary.
  • Assure the health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and regulations.
  • Direct group activities of students as assigned; assist in monitoring lunchroom and playground activities as assigned; assist in emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, and field trips.
  • Participate in meetings and in-service training programs as assigned.
  • Supervise youth in their daily routines.
  • Participate in the implementation of individual treatment plans.
  • Attend staff meetings and case conferences where policy and methods of treatment are developed.
  • Must be able to physically restrain and/or control youth in day treatment or detention center.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. Certificate or demonstrated progress toward obtaining a G.E.D. as required by Kentucky law.
  • Experience working with children in an organized setting.
  • Pass the Kentucky Paraeducator Assessment (KPA) test prior to employment.
