About the position

The Paraeducator - Special Education (Subseparate) position is accountable for providing assistance to the classroom teacher and/or other certified personnel, to support the instruction of all students and to facilitate educational access for students using sound judgment and confirming with the rules and regulations of the Worcester Public Schools. This position may be in a substantially separate environment with students with moderate to severe disabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the classroom teacher by reviewing, correcting and reinforcing lessons with individual and small groups of students in all content areas and other activities.
  • Assist in preparation and inventory of instructional materials and the setting-up, operating and maintenance of various classroom learning aids and equipment.
  • Support student physical and personal care needs such as assisting in lavatory routines, toileting, diapering, lifting, etc.
  • Supervise breakfast and/or lunch periods, assemblies and clean up of work areas.
  • Assist the classroom teacher in clerical work which may include recording daily attendance, cataloging and filing instructional materials.
  • Participate and contribute to weekly, monthly and long-range planning with the classroom teacher for instructional activities.
  • Assist the classroom teacher during the work day in maintaining open communication under the supervision of the teacher and/or administrator.
  • Maintain student confidentiality.
  • Supervise and support children in both structured and unstructured activities throughout the day.
  • Contribute to a warm and open atmosphere for student growth and development.
  • Serve as the guiding source of information and assist any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the teacher.
  • Implement district and school-wide rules, policies and procedures and individual student behavior plans.
  • Adhere to all testing protocols for students, including formal and informal testing, and participate in related professional development.
  • Perform duties associated within specialty areas, including those assigned to special projects requiring specialized training.
  • Perform duty work (lunch, recess, line, bus) as required by the Building Principal.
  • Participate in non-violent crisis intervention training within the first 3 years of employment.

Requirements

  • An Associate of Arts degree, or
  • 48 undergraduate college credits, or
  • Meeting or exceeding the State-determined score on the Para-professional Assessment or the Work Keys Assessment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Non-violent crisis intervention trained
  • Previous experience supporting students with special needs
  • Ability to speak Albanian, Arabic, Nepali, Portuguese, Spanish, Vietnamese or an African Language.
