About the position

The Georgia Department of Human Services (DHS) is seeking a Paralegal 2 to join the Division of Aging Services (DAS). This position plays a crucial role in supporting legal proceedings and ensuring that the agency's legal needs are met efficiently. Under general supervision, the Paralegal 2 will conduct research to support legal actions, draft and prepare legal documents, and assist legal offices with scheduling hearings, appointments, and interviews. The position is located at 47 Trinity Ave SW, Atlanta, GA 30334, and offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the mission of strengthening Georgia by providing services to vulnerable populations. In this role, the Paralegal 2 will be responsible for logging and tracking subpoenas, record requests, and other pleadings. They will schedule guardianship initiation and other non-standard case staffings for Adult Protective Services and Guardianship Field Operation Managers. The paralegal will also edit documents in preparation for assistance from the Senior Assistant Attorney General (SAAG), document and track legal needs requests with the Law Department until a final order or conclusion is reached, and maintain updated lists of assigned SAAGs and Probate Court Judges. Additionally, the paralegal will assist with mail receipt at the Division's main office, including electronic scanning and routing to the appropriate receiver. The position requires maintaining knowledge of current policies, laws, trends, and developments in the field by attending training sessions and meetings. The Paralegal 2 will also be expected to perform other professional responsibilities as assigned, demonstrating core competencies such as providing excellent customer service, cooperating with team members, delivering consistent business results, and maintaining public trust through accountability and sound judgment.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research to support legal proceedings and formulate defenses or initiate legal actions.
  • Draft and prepare legal documents for review.
  • Log and track subpoenas, record requests, and other pleadings.
  • Schedule guardianship initiation and other non-standard case staffings for Adult Protective Services and Guardianship Field Operation Managers.
  • Edit documents in preparation for SAAG assistance and document legal needs requests with the Law Department until final order or conclusion.
  • Track and update the Law Department lists of assigned SAAGs and Probate Court Judges.
  • Assist with mail receipt at the Division's main office, including electronic scanning and routing to appropriate receivers.
  • Maintain knowledge of current policies, laws, trends, and developments in the field by attending training sessions and meetings.
  • Perform other professional responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in paralegal studies from an accredited college or university.
  • Certificate from a paralegal training program AND one (1) year of experience in a legal environment.
  • Two (2) years of experience as a legal assistant in a legal environment.

Nice-to-haves

  • One year of experience in a legal environment with a state agency.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (WORD, EXCEL, Power Point, etc.).
