About the position

The Attorney General's Office is seeking a permanent full-time Paralegal 2 in the Ecology Division, located in Olympia, Washington. This position is represented by the Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE) and offers a salary range of $59,844 to $80,460, effective July 1, 2024. The base pay will be determined based on internal equity and the candidate's job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Additional stipends may apply for those assigned to the Seattle office or those with dual language skills. The Ecology Division consists of 30 attorneys and 12 professional staff, representing various state entities such as the Department of Ecology and the Puget Sound Partnership. The division addresses environmental issues through legal means, including negotiation, mediation, and litigation. The work is diverse and includes high-profile cases, making it ideal for candidates who thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. As a Paralegal 2, the incumbent will supervise one to two paralegals and report to the administrative operations manager. Responsibilities include preparing performance and development plans, mentoring staff, and providing litigation support. The role also involves backing up attorneys and acting as a critical events reader. This recruitment may fill multiple positions within the same classification.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise one to two paralegals and report to the administrative operations manager.
  • Prepare annual performance and development plans for supervised employees.
  • Review performance of supervised employees and make recommendations for awards and promotions.
  • Mentor and train assigned paralegal 1 and/or legal assistant staff.
  • Perform litigation support tasks in assigned cases.
  • Back up other attorneys as needed.
  • Act as a critical events reader.

Requirements

  • Combination of four years of experience through paralegal certification, two-year paralegal degree, and/or paraprofessional experience in support of an attorney.
  • Three years' experience as a Paralegal 1 in Washington State Service.
  • Experience in supervision or mentoring others, especially within the AGO.
  • Familiarity with the Blue Book, Westlaw, Law Manager, Everlaw, MS Office Suite, and Adobe Acrobat software.
