About the position

The Paralegal 2 position at Spokane County is a full-time role responsible for supporting the Prosecuting Attorney's Office and the Public Defender's Office by creating and drafting legal documents, assisting attorneys in various legal proceedings, and managing case preparation with minimal supervision. This role requires discretion, confidentiality, and a professional demeanor while dealing with sensitive legal matters and clients. A solid understanding of the criminal justice system and constitutional rights is essential for success in this position.

Responsibilities

  • Create and draft various legal documents for the Prosecuting Attorney's Office and the Public Defender's Office.
  • Assist attorneys in pretrial preparation, trials, public hearings, meetings, or arbitrations.
  • Research case law and assist with trial briefs to support cases.
  • Review pre-trial motions and requests for discovery from defense attorneys, prepare responses, and track responses.
  • Prepare instructions for submission to the court and edit/proofread briefs and legal memos.
  • File agreed orders after completion and assist in drafting legal documents under attorney supervision.
  • Operate word processing and database systems as required.
  • Communicate with police, corrections officers, agencies, witnesses, and victims to obtain pertinent facts.
  • Interpret legal documents and explain legal procedures to victims, witnesses, and others.
  • Assist attorneys with tasks necessary for trial and perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in Paralegal Studies or a Certificate in paralegal studies.
  • One year of experience in a paralegal position with a criminal justice agency or law firm requiring legal research and related duties.
  • Possession of a valid Washington Driver's License at time of hire and for the duration of employment.
  • Knowledge of legal terminology, legal and regulatory requirements, and procedures.
  • Skilled in communicating effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to accurately keyboard a minimum of 50 words per minute.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with legal drafting and macros.
  • Familiarity with word processing, database, and presentation applications.
