About the position

The Paralegal 2 - Victim Navigator position is primarily focused on assisting crime victims and witnesses by establishing and maintaining contact and rapport, explaining their rights and the resources available to them, and facilitating necessary case activities under the direction of the investigating trooper or a supervisor. The role involves keeping victims and witnesses informed about the status of their case and the investigative process, while also serving as a liaison with other agencies and victim advocacy groups. This position is crucial in ensuring that victims receive the support they need during the often challenging aftermath of a crime. As a member of the Department of Public Safety (DPS), the incumbent will play a vital role in fulfilling the department's mission to preserve peace, enforce the law, prevent and detect crime, and protect life and property. The work environment is dynamic and fast-paced, requiring the ability to work effectively with both civilian and commissioned professionals. The position is located at the Alaska State Trooper post in Ketchikan, Alaska, and involves direct interaction with victims and survivors of felony-level crimes, as well as frequent collaboration with prosecutors and victim witness paralegals. The incumbent will be supervised out of Anchorage and will work closely with team members in Ketchikan to support the mission. The role may require travel to Prince of Wales or Juneau by ferry or small aircraft, and the ability to work overtime during the standard workweek, on weekends, and/or holidays may be necessary to provide support for specific cases. This position is open to Alaskan residents only, reflecting the department's commitment to serving the local community effectively.

Responsibilities

Requirements

  • Successful completion of training under a formally established Paralegal 1-2 flexible staffing training plan with the State of Alaska.
  • Experience in working within the criminal justice system, including knowledge of applicable laws and regulations regarding victims' rights.
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office Suite Programs (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, and Publisher).
  • Post-secondary and/or vocational education in a legal, paralegal, criminal justice, or similar legal support area.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience performing paraprofessional legal investigation and discovery.
  • Ability to deal calmly and effectively with high-stress situations.
  • Knowledge of State and federal administrative laws, including procedures, regulations, guidelines, and precedents related to case preparation and settlements.
