About the position

The Attorney General's Office is seeking a dedicated and skilled Paralegal 2 to join the Labor & Industries Division in Seattle, Washington. This permanent full-time position plays a crucial role in supporting the mission of the office by providing advanced paralegal assistance, which is essential for the effective practice of law within the division. The Paralegal 2 will primarily focus on mediation duties, representing the Department of Labor & Industries at mediation conferences conducted by the Board of Industrial Insurance Appeals. This involves reviewing appeal files, analyzing complex legal and factual issues, conducting investigations, and gathering relevant information to facilitate the resolution of appeals. The paralegal will also prepare proposals for settlement, participate in negotiations, and communicate with various stakeholders, including potential witnesses and opposing counsel. In addition to mediation responsibilities, the position may involve litigation support duties as needed. This includes providing paralegal support to attorneys, reviewing and preparing responses to formal discovery requests, and managing documentary and statistical evidence for civil litigation. The Labor & Industries Division handles a wide variety of cases, from entry-level to highly complex matters, and the work is of central importance to the business economy of Washington State. Responsibilities

  • Mediation of appeals before the Board of Industrial Insurance Appeals under the supervision of an Assistant Attorney General.
  • Review appeal files prior to the first settlement conference and analyze complex legal and factual issues.
  • Conduct investigations to gather relevant information and documents for mediation.
  • Contact other parties to resolve appeals and perform legal and medical research as required.
  • Prepare proposals for settlement and evaluate proposals from other parties, consulting with Department employees or senior attorneys.
  • Participate in negotiations and discuss settlement potential with client contacts, obtaining settlement authority to enter into agreements.
  • Communicate with the Department by memoranda describing accomplished settlements.
  • For assigned cases that do not resolve in mediation, forward files for assignment to attorneys with a completed review summary.
  • Provide paralegal support to attorneys within the divisional programs as needed.
  • Review and prepare responses to formal discovery requests, including interrogatories and requests for production.

Requirements

  • Combination of four years of experience through paralegal certification, two-year paralegal degree, and/or paraprofessional experience in support of an attorney.
  • Three years' experience as a Paralegal 1 in Washington State Service may also qualify.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in mediation or litigation support within a legal environment.
  • Familiarity with Washington State labor and industries laws and regulations.
