About the position

The Paralegal position within the Assisted Outpatient Treatment Program at the San Bernardino County Public Defender's Office focuses on providing legal support to individuals struggling with mental health issues. Responsibilities

  • Assist with referrals and preparation of legal paperwork for the AOT program.
  • Provide field-based consultation and representation to potential AOT clients.
  • Assist in the preparation of legal documents and trial preparation.
  • Conduct legal research and analysis as needed.
  • Support attorneys with issues pertaining to warrants.

Requirements

  • Possess a certificate of completion of a paralegal program approved by the American Bar Association.
  • Possess a certificate of completion of a paralegal program or a degree from an accredited institution with law-related courses.
  • Possess a baccalaureate or advanced degree with at least one year of law-related experience under a qualified attorney.

Nice-to-haves

  • Criminal law practice experience.
  • Familiarity with spreadsheets and Excel programs.
  • Experience working with the indigent population.
  • Bilingual skills (Spanish/English) are highly desired.

Benefits

  • Salary increases of 3% effective February 2025 and February 2026 contingent upon performance.
  • Bi-annual step increases of approximately 2.5%.
  • Mileage reimbursement for travel throughout the County.
