About the position

The Paralegal position under the District Attorney's office focuses on providing research and administrative support to attorneys involved in civil litigation. The role includes drafting legal documents, maintaining case files, and assisting in trial preparation, ensuring that all legal processes are followed efficiently and effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Processes driving while intoxicated (DWI), felony, and vehicle/property forfeiture files.
  • Prepares cases for the docket including issuing subpoenas and compiling petitions.
  • Assists attorneys with current case law research and case preparation.
  • Requests investigative searches for prior convictions and current addresses.
  • Drafts legal documents and correspondence such as probable cause paragraphs and Grand Jury presentations.
  • Maintains division statistics involving caseload information.
  • Maintains calendar for case settings and hearings, notifying law enforcement of trial dates.
  • Provides case status information to judges, law enforcement, victims, and opposing attorneys.
  • Maintains attorneys' schedules and communicates with opposing counsel regarding deadlines.
  • Organizes and coordinates complex discovery, maintaining understanding of discovery status.
  • Creates and organizes physical and electronic files of written discovery and deposition transcripts.
  • Communicates with County employees regarding litigation or administrative matters.
  • Drafts basic litigation documents such as notices of appearance and deposition notices.
  • Assists in all phases of trial and hearing preparation, including setting/attending hearings and preparing witnesses.
  • Maintains knowledge of litigation technology including trial presentation software and e-discovery.
  • Ensures security and confidentiality of sensitive information.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate's Degree in Legal Assistance.
  • Two years of legal experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of legal terminology involved in civil and criminal procedures.
  • Skill in completing legal research.
  • Ability to organize legal information and communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse groups.

  • Experience with litigation technology and e-discovery tools.
