About the position

The Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS) is seeking a detail-oriented Paralegal to support its mission of promoting economic growth and stability while ensuring the safety and competence of licensed professionals in Wisconsin. This position will be responsible for coordinating the legal review process for credential applications and providing professional support to attorneys in drafting legal documents, researching legal and factual issues, and managing application files. The role will be filled at either the entry or advanced level, depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate. In this position, the Paralegal will proofread documents drafted by others to ensure accuracy and completeness, communicate with applicants regarding their application status, and handle inquiries related to the legal review process. The Paralegal will also be responsible for filing legal documents such as pleadings, motions, briefs, and recommended proposed decisions with the Division of Hearings and Appeals, as well as serving these documents on opposing parties. Additionally, the Paralegal will make arrangements for hearings, including scheduling court reporters and coordinating the appearances of witnesses. The position is headquartered at the Hill Farms State Office Building in Madison, WI, which is conveniently located near various restaurants and shops. Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the legal review process for credential applications.
  • Provide professional support to attorneys in drafting legal documents.
  • Research legal and factual issues related to credentialing matters.
  • Proofread documents to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Communicate with applicants regarding application status and inquiries.
  • File legal documents with the Division of Hearings and Appeals.
  • Make arrangements for hearings, including scheduling court reporters and coordinating witness appearances.
  • Manage application files and ensure they are organized and up-to-date.

Requirements

  • Experience using Microsoft Office, Outlook, Excel, Adobe, SharePoint, or comparable software.
  • Experience drafting legal documents and communicating with customers in writing.
  • Strong attention to detail in proofreading and drafting correspondence.
  • Paralegal certification or related degree, or experience working in a paralegal role.
  • Experience with state statutes and administrative code, administrative law, criminal law, or litigation.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience supporting multiple attorneys.
  • Experience using and maintaining case management and reporting tools.
