About the position

Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas (LANWT) is seeking a dedicated and proactive paralegal to join its Home Preservation Project. This full-time position is hybrid/remote, based in Farmers Branch, Texas. The ideal candidate will have a strong commitment to public interest law and will work under the direct supervision of a licensed attorney. The paralegal will be responsible for assisting clients who fall under LANWT's set priorities, providing paraprofessional legal services in civil and family cases, and ensuring compliance with the Texas Disciplinary Rules of Professional Conduct and the American Bar Association's Standards for Providers of Civil Legal Services to the Poor. The paralegal's duties will include conducting client intake, developing cases, drafting legal documents, and maintaining organized records. The role also involves outreach and community legal education, assisting attorneys in representing clients, and making referrals to other resources. The paralegal will be expected to develop specialized skills and knowledge in assigned areas, keep abreast of legal changes, and represent clients at hearings when necessary. This position offers an opportunity to make a significant impact in the lives of low-income individuals and families in North and West Texas.

Responsibilities

  • Assist clients under the supervision of a licensed attorney.
  • Provide paraprofessional legal services in civil and family cases.
  • Participate in outreach and community legal education.
  • Conduct client intake and initial screenings.
  • Investigate and develop assigned cases and projects.
  • Draft pleadings, orders, letters, and memos.
  • File legal papers and interact with court staff.
  • Maintain accurate and organized records and files.
  • Develop specialized skills and knowledge in assigned areas.
  • Translate for clients who speak a different language (if applicable).
  • Seek supervision and guidance from supervising attorneys.
  • Participate in training programs and staff meetings.
  • Report caseload statistics and activities to supervisors.
  • Travel to administrative agencies as needed.
  • Develop knowledge of law and legal skills relevant to LANWT's clients.
  • Advise management on changes in law affecting clients.
  • Make referrals to social service agencies.
  • Represent clients at hearings as permitted.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree and paralegal certification preferred.
  • Prior legal services, public interest, or volunteer experience preferred.
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and self-motivated.
  • Ability to establish priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Professional and courteous interaction with individuals at all levels.
  • Excellent computer skills, particularly with Microsoft products.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise good judgment.
  • Fluency in Spanish (verbal and written) preferred.
  • Ability to engage in occasional work-related travel.
  • Excellent attendance record.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in public interest law or legal aid organizations.
  • Knowledge of social service agencies that assist low-income clients.
