About the position

The Paralegal I position at The Legal Aid Society is designed to support the Civil Practice office citywide by providing essential client services and ensuring access to available resources. This role involves a variety of tasks including data entry, record management, client intake support, and communication with clients and external agencies. The Paralegal I may also be required to perform duties at different Legal Aid Society offices or intake sites as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Open and close cases in Law Manager
  • Maintain and update case details
  • Scan files and initiate conflict checks
  • Generate routine reports
  • Manage record and file management, including archiving cases
  • Scan and distribute incoming mail
  • Prepare and send outgoing mail
  • Manage court-ordered service of documents
  • Perform messenger assignments for field delivery and service of legal papers
  • Provide oral and written translation and interpretation support
  • Assist with client intake, including screening and referrals
  • Help complete client intake forms and releases
  • Register and schedule clients for appointments and interviews
  • Conduct intermediate conflict checks
  • Maintain and update Unit Law Manager files
  • Refer clients to outside agencies and services when applicable
  • Provide office reception and switchboard coverage
  • Perform other job band functions as needed

Requirements

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent work experience
  • One year of experience in a legal or relevant work environment is highly preferred
  • Some relevant college level work and/or paralegal training preferred
  • Strong writing, verbal, and organization skills
  • Proficiency in word processing and strong computer skills
  • Ability to learn and efficiently use new systems
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively on a team
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including nights and/or weekends
  • Experience in and/or commitment to advocacy on behalf of low-income people is strongly desired

Nice-to-haves

  • Fluency in Spanish or other languages is highly preferred
