About the position

The City Attorney's Office is seeking an experienced paralegal to provide paraprofessional legal support services and case management for attorneys in the General Civil Section. This section encompasses a diverse range of practice areas, and the paralegal will be responsible for performing specialized and confidential tasks. These tasks include the preparation of legal documents related to human resources, employment, and contracts for various City departments. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in preparing responses for state and federal discrimination investigations, unemployment hearings, grievances, arbitrations, and similar complaints. Additionally, experience in drafting legal documents such as contracts, legal opinions, and other relevant legal materials is essential, along with a proven ability to manage diverse assignments independently. In this role, the paralegal will also be tasked with scheduling witnesses and performing general administrative duties as assigned. The position requires a proactive approach and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment. The salary for this position is based on qualifications and experience, with a range of $24.16 to $30.81 per hour. Candidates must meet the minimum qualifications outlined in the position description to be considered for the role. For the Paralegal I level, candidates must possess an Associate Degree in Legal Services or a related field, along with two years of experience as a Legal Assistant, including one year as a paralegal conducting legal research in relevant areas such as criminal law, real property, or general civil law. A four-year college degree is preferred. Candidates must also demonstrate typing proficiency of at least 35 words per minute and pass a background investigation. For the Paralegal II level, a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice, Legal Studies, or a closely related field is required, along with three years of relevant paralegal experience in legal research. Similar typing proficiency and background investigation requirements apply. Candidates are encouraged to provide detailed information regarding their relevant experience in their applications.

Responsibilities

Requirements

  • Two years of experience as a Legal Assistant required for Paralegal I, with one year as a paralegal doing legal research.
  • Three years of relevant paralegal experience conducting legal research required for Paralegal II.
  • Demonstrated ability to type at least 35 words per minute.
  • Must pass a background investigation.
