About the position

The Paralegal I position at Academy Sports + Outdoors focuses on supporting the legal team in real estate and construction matters. The role involves document management, legal research, and assisting with commercial real estate transactions, ensuring compliance with legal standards and company policies.

Responsibilities

  • Document collection, preparation, processing
  • Matter in-take
  • Matter management with attorney supervision
  • Draft relevant documents from forms
  • Finalize documents, and collect signatures, including using e-signature platforms
  • Assist in planning meetings and developing training materials
  • Interface with business partners as needed
  • Conduct basic legal research, including locating statutes, cases, and regulatory materials
  • Collect, organize, and maintain legal documents in a confidential and secure manner
  • Review, analyze, and process invoices and check requests to ensure timely payment in accordance with legal department guidelines
  • Metrics tracking and reporting
  • Intake and appropriately distribute Legal Department mail and e-mail correspondence
  • May be required to perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent required
  • At least 1 year of relevant experience
  • Experience in commercial real estate transactions, including construction agreements, design agreements, consulting agreements, vendor contracts, purchase orders, and commercial leases
  • Experience in reviewing, drafting and negotiating commercial real estate lease agreements, especially big box retail, anchor tenant agreements, and national tenants
  • Experience with lease related documents including estoppels, subordination, non-disturbance and attornment agreements, collateral assignments, lien waivers, and applications for payment
  • Experience with construction and design issues, lien waivers, notices of furnishing, notices to proceed/commencement, certificates of substantial completion, and other related construction documentation
  • Experience with master services agreements, site specific addenda, and scopes of work (including construction, design, and other types of work)
  • Experience reviewing and evaluating due diligence materials, such as title search results, ALTA surveys, and zoning reports
  • Experience reviewing and evaluating shopping center master covenants and reciprocal easement agreements, along with drafting waivers among occupants for use, location or other operating restrictions
  • Basic knowledge of commercial real estate transactions, commercial contracts, and amendments
  • Strong technical aptitude with case management systems (Legal Tracker, Exterro, Navex) and document management software (Conga, iManage)
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office programs, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Ability to remain organized, pay strict attention to detail, and meet critical deadlines
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to support multiple legal professionals
  • Ability to operate professionally, effectively, and ethically as an individual contributor and member of a team
  • Ability to identify basic legal issues
  • Consistently operate with the highest level of discernment and confidentiality

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of AIA forms is helpful, but not required
