About the position

The Paralegal I position at The Legal Aid Society's Shared Services Department is designed to support various legal practices by performing essential administrative and legal tasks. This role is crucial in ensuring that the organization can provide high-quality legal representation to clients across New York City. The position involves court filings, document production, and collaboration with legal teams, contributing to the overall mission of ensuring equal justice for all New Yorkers.

Responsibilities

  • Performs New York State court filings and service of brief, writs, subpoenas and legal instruments on the District Attorneys, Attorney General and other legal entities
  • Collaborates with our Civil, Criminal and Juvenile Rights practices to provide quality representation
  • Produces legal documents and training material using standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Processes incoming and outgoing mail and packages using USPS, FedEx, UPS, DHL and other messenger services
  • Performs messenger services between locations
  • Secures and distributes interoffice checks and documents
  • Inputs and extrapolates information using active databases
  • Uses Law Manager to derive relevant information
  • Manages our Corporate Reception area
  • Provides general information to clients, colleagues and visitors
  • Operates our Avaya Main Switchboard system to direct callers to internal/external resources
  • Refers callers or walk-ins requesting legal assistance to our Intake systems
  • Maintains office logs and filing, generates periodic reports
  • Provides oral and written translations via tele-language provider
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Associate's degree or High School/Technical/Vocational Diploma or equivalent work experience
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and problem solve
  • Proficiency in using computers and basic technology

Nice-to-haves

  • Proficiency in languages other than English, especially Spanish, is desirable, but not required
