About the position

The Washington State Bar Association (WSBA) is seeking a Paralegal I for a temporary position within the Regulatory Services Department (RSD). This role is crucial in providing support and assistance to the lawyers in the department, as well as to supervisors and staff liaisons working with regulatory and Supreme Court boards. The position is designed to last no longer than six months, with a pay rate of $27.00 per hour. The WSBA's mission is to serve the public and its members, ensuring the integrity of the legal profession and championing justice. The Paralegal I will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including coordinating meeting schedules, preparing meeting materials, drafting agendas and correspondence, and taking notes during meetings. The role also involves responding to email inquiries, assisting in the preparation and grading of LPO examinations, and maintaining exam statistics. Additionally, the paralegal will draft legal documents for review, proofread and edit documents prepared by RSD lawyers, and process grievances against Limited License Legal Technicians (LLLTs) and Limited Practice Officers (LPOs). This position requires a high level of confidentiality and integrity, as well as strong analytical and communication skills. The ability to work independently and as part of a team is essential. The working environment is primarily remote, but flexibility to work in the office or travel within Washington State may be required. Candidates must reside in Washington State at the time of hire and during their employment with WSBA.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in providing staff support to regulatory and Supreme Court Boards, Committees, Panels, and Task Forces.
  • Coordinate meeting and hearing schedules, and make facility, travel, court reporter, and other meeting arrangements.
  • Prepare, organize, and distribute meeting materials, and track expenses.
  • Draft agendas and correspondence.
  • Attend meetings and hearings, take notes, and draft minutes.
  • Respond to email inquiries sent to the LLLT and LPO mailboxes.
  • Assist in preparing and grading LPO examinations and coordinate with exam graders to complete grading exams.
  • Maintain exam statistics.
  • Update and maintain information for the LLLT Board and LP Board, including lists of members and information relating to the appointment of new members.
  • Draft documents for review by RSD lawyers as needed, including letters, reports, summaries of research results, legal memoranda, pleadings, and amendments to WSBA bylaws and court rules.
  • Proofread and edit documents prepared by RSD lawyers.
  • Process grievances by opening grievance files against LLLTs and LPOs, analyzing grievance information, and maintaining the public record of LPO and LLLT discipline.
  • Perform and/or assist with other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Paralegal degree or certificate or very comparable degree or substantial equivalent, related experience.
  • Bachelor's degree (B.A., B.S.) preferred.
  • Paralegal experience preferred.
  • High level legal administrative assistant experience preferred.
  • Uphold the highest level of confidentiality and integrity with privileged information, documents, records, etc.
  • Utmost attention to detail.
  • Advanced reading, writing, and editing skills; analytical skills.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and as a team player.
  • Ability to prioritize, work efficiently, and use good judgment.
  • Excellent social and verbal communication skills appropriate to maintaining good relations with the public and members.
  • Intermediate to advanced experience using Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Outlook), and Adobe Pro.
