About the position

The Paralegal I position at the Oklahoma Health Care Authority (OHCA) provides essential paraprofessional legal assistance to attorneys within the Legal Division. This role is critical in supporting the legal team by drafting, editing, and proofreading complex legal documents, including motions, briefs, and pleadings. The paralegal will engage in legal research utilizing various online databases and resources, analyze findings, and summarize research to assist attorneys in drawing informed conclusions. Additionally, the position involves coordinating with witnesses, preparing them for hearings, and ensuring that all relevant documentation and exhibits are secured and organized for case files. The paralegal will be responsible for filing documents in both state and federal courts, including e-filing, and must track and ensure compliance with all filing and response deadlines. This role also includes performing administrative support tasks for assigned attorneys, such as managing incoming mail, scheduling meetings, and typing and editing documents. The position may require occasional travel using public or private transportation, necessitating a valid driver's license and the ability to drive. Candidates for this position should possess an Associate degree in Paralegal Studies, Legal Studies, or a related field, along with relevant experience. Alternatively, candidates with a Certified Paralegal Certification and additional experience as a paralegal or legal assistant will also be considered. The work environment is primarily office-based, with regular exposure to standard office equipment and the need to remain seated for extended periods while working on a computer. Physical demands include the ability to lift or move up to 15 pounds as necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Draft, edit, and proofread complex legal documents and correspondence.
  • Perform legal research using online databases and other sources.
  • Analyze and summarize research findings and draw conclusions as directed by attorneys.
  • Contact, schedule, and assist with the preparation of witnesses for hearings.
  • Secure exhibits and relevant documentation for legal proceedings.
  • Organize and maintain case files to ensure completeness.
  • File documents in state and federal court, including e-filing.
  • Track and ensure compliance with filing and response deadlines.
  • Perform administrative support duties for assigned attorneys, including managing mail and scheduling meetings.
  • Assist with typing and editing documents as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by General Counsel or Deputy General Counsels.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in Paralegal Studies, Legal Studies, or a related field AND one (1) year of paralegal or legal assistant experience.
  • Certified Paralegal Certification approved by a national association or ABA approved program AND two (2) years of experience as a paralegal or legal assistant.
  • High school diploma or equivalent education AND three (3) years of experience as a paralegal or legal assistant.

Nice-to-haves

  • Formal training or certification as a Paralegal or Legal Assistant.

  • Experience in Medicaid or other healthcare-related legal matters.
