About the position

The Paralegal provides essential legal support to the in-house legal team at Horizon, focusing primarily on litigation. This role involves preparing and maintaining legal documents, conducting investigations, coordinating document collections, and performing legal research. The Paralegal communicates with various internal and external contacts, assists in organizing company documents, and exercises independent judgment to make recommendations on legal matters.

Responsibilities

  • Organize, maintain and update departmental files.
  • Prepare legal documents for review, approval, and use by attorneys, primarily for Fair Hearings and jurisdiction matters.
  • Analyze data and write reports as requested.
  • Provide administrative assistance including drafting letters, scheduling meetings, and preparing expense reports.
  • Perform factual investigation and research.
  • Manage the intake, response, and coordination of the Company's subpoenas.
  • Assist in obtaining, organizing, analyzing, and providing documents related to litigation or investigation.
  • Oversee case management, including financial management.
  • Negotiate resolution of matters pursuant to authorized authority.
  • Research, monitor, and maintain knowledge of developments in federal and state legislation affecting the health insurance industry.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED required; Bachelor degree preferred or relevant experience in lieu of degree.
  • Minimum of one (1) to three (3) years of paralegal experience required; litigation experience highly preferred.
  • Paralegal certification from an ABA accredited paralegal program is preferred; applicable work experience may be considered in lieu of certification.
  • Experience in a highly regulated industry preferred; working knowledge of New Jersey litigation practice preferred.
  • Proficiency in MS Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and legal research software.
