About the position

The City and County of Denver is seeking a Paralegal II to join its Civil Litigation Section within the City Attorney's Office. This position is integral to supporting attorneys in a variety of legal tasks, particularly in civil litigation matters. The successful candidate will perform intermediate-level paralegal tasks, which include drafting legal documents, managing deadlines, preparing trial and hearing exhibit notebooks, and conducting thorough research and analysis. The role requires a strong understanding of civil litigation processes in both state and federal courts, including appeals, and the ability to assist attorneys throughout all phases of litigation, from trial preparation to post-trial activities. The City Attorney's Office is one of the largest law firms in Colorado, representing a diverse array of clients, including the Mayor, City Council, and various city agencies. Responsibilities

  • Perform lead work as necessary, providing work instruction and assisting with difficult or unusual assignments.
  • Conduct research and summarize laws, court decisions, and other legal authorities for case preparation.
  • Investigate the facts of cases and ensure all relevant information is considered.
  • Collect, compile, organize, and analyze data for reports and documentation using Bates-stamping, redaction, de-duplication, and indexing.
  • Prepare and present written legal analysis, reports, and recommendations to attorneys.
  • Draft privilege logs, complaints, affidavits, motions, interrogatories, and other pleadings related to trial preparation and discovery.
  • Provide administrative legal support services, managing case/matter documentation and facilitating open records requests.
  • Assist attorneys at depositions/trials in preparing motions, briefs, and pleadings.
  • Provide immediate research and document retrieval during trials, depositions, and hearings.
  • Assemble and prepare documentation/exhibits based on investigatory/discovery materials.
  • Organize and index case documentation, ensuring accessibility for attorneys.
  • File documents in the proper filing system and manage case/matter documentation.
  • Locate witnesses, conduct interviews, and assist attorneys in preparing for depositions/trials.
  • Prepare exhibits for hearings and assemble trial notebooks and exhibits.
  • Assist in the preparation and revision of routine contracts and respond to counter proposals.
  • Prepare correspondence and legal documents requiring knowledge of legal format and procedures.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate.
  • Two (2) years of full-time paralegal experience in a public or private law office, not including internships.
  • Significant experience in civil litigation in both state and federal courts, including appeals.
  • Strong background in supporting attorneys through all phases of the litigation process.
  • Knowledge of electronic court filing procedures and rules for state and federal courts, including appellate courts.
  • Proficiency in MS-Office 365, Adobe-Pro, Westlaw or LexisNexis, and other relevant software.
  • Proven expertise in legal research, writing, and analysis skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with clients, attorneys, and other staff members.
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent problem-solving skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • At least five (5) years of experience with complex civil litigation in both state and federal court.
  • Experience with trial preparation and trial support in both state and federal courts.
  • Civil rights defense and/or personal injury legal experience.
  • Experience with electronic discovery and document management software.
