About the position

The Ohio Attorney General's Office is seeking four organized and detail-oriented individuals for the position of Paralegal/Legal Assistant 1 within the Workers' Compensation section. This role is essential in providing paralegal support to attorneys handling various cases. The position operates on a hybrid schedule, combining in-person and remote work, with potential adjustments based on training and operational needs. Vacancies are available in Columbus, Cleveland, and Cincinnati, allowing for flexibility in location. As a Paralegal/Legal Assistant, you will engage in a variety of tasks that are crucial for the effective management of legal cases. Your responsibilities will include researching federal and state statutes, judicial decisions, and other legal sources to prepare responses to inquiries and assist attorneys with legal and administrative procedural issues. You will perform internet and computer-assisted searches to gather necessary information and documents, and assist in the preparation and presentation of cases in litigation. This includes reviewing, verifying, and organizing documents, as well as preparing and responding to discovery requests and public records requests. In addition to these tasks, you will be responsible for contacting opposing counsel or court personnel as needed, assessing and indexing incoming and outgoing document productions, and utilizing document management software to prepare legal correspondence. Drafting legal briefs, memoranda, contracts, pleadings, motions, and other legal documents will also be part of your duties. You will maintain case calendars and files, file legal documents with the court on behalf of attorneys, respond to general inquiries, and track payments and judgments for reporting purposes. This position requires a high level of attention to detail and strong verbal and written communication skills, as you will be interacting with various stakeholders and preparing critical legal documents.

Responsibilities

  • Researches federal and/or state statutes, recorded judicial decisions and other legal sources and reference materials to prepare responses to inquiries, complaints, claims and legal and/or administrative procedural issues to assist section attorneys.
  • Performs Internet and other computer-assisted searches for information and documents.
  • Assists in the preparation and presentation of cases in litigation, including document review, verification and organization.
  • Helps prepare and respond to discovery requests and public records requests.
  • Contacts opposing counsel or court/board personnel as necessary to assist in case preparation and presentation of cases.
  • Assesses, logs and indexes incoming and outgoing electronic and paper document productions.
  • Uses document management software to prepare legal correspondence; uses case management software.
  • Drafts legal briefs and memoranda, contracts, pleadings, motions, affidavits, legislation, rules and/or regulations.
  • Prepares case summaries, legal documents and reports for review, approval and signature of and/or use by section attorneys.
  • Maintains case calendars and case files.
  • Manually and/or electronically files legal documents with court on behalf of attorneys.
  • Responds to general inquiries.
  • Processes and tracks payments and wire transfers.
  • Tracks judgments, consent orders, and related information for reporting purposes.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • 24 months paid work experience as a paralegal/legal assistant.
  • Successful completion of a certificated program for paralegal or legal assistant.
  • Successful completion of 12 months of education from an accredited law school.
  • Equivalent of minimum class qualifications for employment noted above.
