The incumbent will work closely with attorneys in the assigned organization to provide essential paralegal support for critical, high-profile, and time-sensitive cases conducted by the agency. This role requires a detailed understanding of a diverse combination of case law, government policies, federal regulations, legal texts, and both state and federal statutes. The incumbent will be responsible for conducting substantive legal analysis in support of the assigned attorneys in the Office of the Chief Prosecutor. This includes researching and analyzing specific factual and legal questions that present a variety of issues, particularly in new and complex areas of the law. In addition to legal research, the incumbent will provide paralegal support to meet the requirements for prosecutions in military commissions. This involves applying considerable resourcefulness to anticipate program end case requirements, developing legal arguments and supporting evidence, resolving conflicting statements, and searching for supporting or contravening precedents. The position also entails providing direct trial support duties that are carried out at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and potentially other locations as directed. The work environment is typically secure, located in the Washington D.C. area, but will also require considerable travel and extended temporary duty, sometimes exceeding 30 days at a time. The incumbent may be exposed to high noise levels, heat, and other hazardous conditions, necessitating the use of safety equipment or similar protective gear. The role demands a proactive approach to legal support and a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of confidentiality and security, particularly when handling classified material.
