About the position

The Paralegal Specialist in the Office of Administrative Law Judges (OALJ) provides essential research assistance and paralegal support to Administrative Law Judges (ALJs) in Covington, LA. The role involves preparing legal documents, analyzing case files, and ensuring compliance with legal requirements to facilitate hearings and decisions under the statutes administered by the Department of Labor.

Responsibilities

• Provides research, legal support, and case development services to assigned ALJs.
• Researches and determines the specific legal actions necessary to prepare cases for hearing.
• Analyzes and prepares responses and actions resulting from orders and motions.
• Prepares necessary legal documents for hearings and anticipates potential issues.
• Examines, analyzes, and evaluates information and documentation in case files.
• Triages cases to determine specific legal actions necessary for preparation.
• Analyzes post-hearing briefs to assist in processing cases.
• Assists in planning and managing the OALJ law library.
• Prepares requests and dispositions for Settlement Judges on referred cases.
• Maintains records and statistics for various legal processes within the agency.

Requirements

• Must be a U.S. Citizen.
• Must be at least 16 years old.
• Specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal Service.
• Experience in overseeing caseload management and tracking essential documents.
• Experience in evaluating case-related materials and ensuring compliance with established guidelines.
• Successful completion of a Master's degree or equivalent graduate degree is acceptable.
