About the position

The Paralegal Specialist in the Office of Administrative Law Judges (OALJ) provides essential research assistance and paralegal support to Administrative Law Judges (ALJs) in Covington, Louisiana. This role involves preparing cases for hearings, analyzing legal documents, and ensuring compliance with legal requirements, thereby facilitating the efficient processing of cases under the statutes administered by the Department of Labor.

Responsibilities

  • Provides research, legal support, and case development services to assigned ALJs.
  • Researches and determines necessary legal actions to prepare cases for hearing.
  • Analyzes and prepares responses and actions resulting from orders and motions.
  • Prepares necessary legal documents for hearings and anticipates potential issues.
  • Researches information, laws, and precedent cases for the ALJs.
  • Provides information to attorneys and judges on the status of cases and required actions.
  • Examines, analyzes, and evaluates information and documentation in case files.
  • Triages cases to determine specific legal actions necessary for preparation.
  • Analyzes post-hearing briefs to assist in case processing and decision-making.
  • Performs legal research to ensure applicable case law is cited correctly.
  • Assists in managing the OALJ law library and responds to subpoena requests.

Requirements

  • Must meet Basic Requirements and Specialized Experience qualifications for the Paralegal Specialist role.
  • Specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-07 level in the Federal Service.
  • Experience in overseeing caseload management and tracking essential documents.
  • Experience in evaluating case-related materials for court activities.
  • Experience in assessing submissions for compliance with established guidelines.
  • Successful completion of a Master's or equivalent graduate degree, or two years of progressively higher-level graduate education.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in legal research and case law analysis.
  • Familiarity with electronic filing systems (EFS).
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
