About the position

The Office of General Counsel is seeking a Paralegal Specialist to perform a variety of legal and administrative functions that support the District of Columbia Courts. This full-time temporary position is expected to last for a maximum of two years and is not eligible for relocation expenses. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting legal research, drafting legal memoranda, and providing litigation support, which includes factual research, document reviews, and discovery processes. The role also involves preparing summaries of opinions, orders, and filings, as well as assisting with legal case management, tracking, and reporting. In addition to these core responsibilities, the Paralegal Specialist will draft analyses of legislative history and records, create and organize exhibits, charts, graphs, and data, and support witness preparation by drafting interview summaries. The position requires the preparation of indexes, authorities, and legal citations, along with providing administrative support as needed. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of the legal processes and be able to work collaboratively with a diverse group of court personnel and customers, embodying the values of Accountability, Excellence, Fairness, Integrity, Respect, and Transparency that the DC Courts uphold.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct legal research and draft legal memoranda.
  • Draft correspondence and routine legal filings.
  • Provide litigation support, including factual research, document reviews, and discovery.
  • Prepare summaries of opinions, orders, and filings.
  • Assist with legal case management, tracking, and reporting.
  • Draft analysis of legislative history and records.
  • Create and organize exhibits, charts, graphs, and data.
  • Support witness preparation and draft interview summaries.
  • Prepare indexes, authorities, and legal citations.
  • Provide administrative support as needed.

Requirements

  • An associate degree in paralegal studies or related field plus three (3) years of administrative, clerical, or paralegal experience in a court or law agency.
  • Experience using eDiscovery, eLitigation, and case management software such as Relativity.
  • Experience using Microsoft Word, virtual meeting and scheduling platforms, and document sharing.
  • Knowledge of the DC Court's jurisdiction and administration is preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • A bachelor's degree in paralegal studies or related field plus one (1) year of administrative, clerical, or paralegal experience in a court or law agency.
  • A master's degree in paralegal studies or related field.
