The Paralegal Specialist position at the Office of Chief Counsel in Camp Springs, MD, involves providing legal support related to federal litigation concerning immigration benefits, commercial and administrative law, ethics, civil procedure, and criminal law. The role includes preparing visa petition appeal briefs and conducting substantive legal research to assist attorneys in their cases.

Responsibilities

• Conduct substantive research using attorney files, law reports, statutes and regulations, and other pertinent sources.
• Analyze facts and legal issues, preparing appropriate memoranda, discussion papers, briefs, or reports reflecting findings from legal research.
• Establish and maintain a computer filing system to track correspondence, visa petition appeals, legal advice, and federal litigation.
• Input data into computer databases concerning federal court litigation and visa petition appeals, and prepare reports and charts as needed.
• Review, develop, and recommend actions on visa petition appeals, drafting briefs and writing reports for District personnel and the Department of Homeland Security.

Requirements

• Must be a U.S. Citizen or U.S. National.
• One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the federal government.
• Experience in planning, developing, interpreting, and resolving complex legal problems.
• Ability to provide authoritative advice to external parties and make recommendations on cases.
• Experience analyzing issues of fact and law to assist attorneys.
