The Paralegal Specialist position is located in the Office of the Legal Adviser (L) within the U.S. Department of State. This office plays a crucial role in advising and representing various Bureaus and missions of the Department, as well as the Secretary and senior leadership, on all legal and legal policy issues that arise in connection with U.S. foreign policy and the Department's work. The position is a full-time, permanent role based in Washington, DC, with a salary range of $117,962 to $153,354 per year, classified under the GS-13 pay scale. The role does not require travel, and while telework is eligible, it is determined by agency policy. As a Paralegal Specialist, the incumbent will conduct extensive and thorough research in various legal and non-legal databases to locate appropriate data, applicable precedents, decisions, and legislative history. This includes interpreting and evaluating evidence, preparing comprehensive litigation reports, and drafting other legal documents as assigned. The specialist will also consult and coordinate with the Department of Justice (DOJ) Assistant U.S. Attorneys and defense counsel across the country, making recommendations regarding case handling. Additionally, the role involves preparing responsive materials for production in litigation and administrative proceedings, evaluating law enforcement privileges, and coordinating with Department FOIA teams as appropriate. Drafting letters, memoranda, and emails, including communications with opposing counsel in litigation matters, is also a key responsibility.
