About the position

Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas (LANWT) is seeking a dedicated and proactive paralegal for the Statewide Expunction Project. This full-time position is available immediately and can be performed in a hybrid or remote capacity across multiple locations in Texas, including Dallas, Fort Worth, Denton, McKinney, Lubbock, Amarillo, Midland, and Odessa. The paralegal will work under the direct supervision of a licensed attorney and will be responsible for assisting clients who fall under LANWT's set priorities, ensuring that all work is completed in accordance with the organization's policies and the ethical standards set forth by the Texas Disciplinary Rules of Professional Conduct and the American Bar Association. The paralegal's role includes providing paraprofessional legal services to eligible clients in civil and family law cases, conducting outreach and community legal education, and assisting attorneys in representing clients. Responsibilities also encompass conducting client intake, drafting legal documents, filing pleadings, maintaining organized case records, and developing specialized knowledge in relevant legal areas. The paralegal will be expected to engage in continuous learning and stay updated on legal developments that may impact LANWT's client population. Additionally, the position requires the ability to translate for clients who speak different languages, if applicable, and to travel to administrative agencies as needed. This position is ideal for individuals who are detail-oriented, organized, and self-motivated, with a strong commitment to public interest law. Responsibilities

  • Assist clients under the supervision of a licensed attorney according to LANWT's priorities.
  • Provide paraprofessional legal services in civil and family law cases.
  • Participate in outreach and community legal education to clients and community groups.
  • Conduct client intake by answering calls and screening applicants.
  • Investigate and develop assigned cases, including conducting interviews.
  • Draft pleadings, orders, letters, and other legal documents.
  • File legal papers at the courthouse or through e-filing and interact with court staff.
  • Maintain accurate and organized records regarding cases and projects.
  • Develop specialized skills and knowledge in assigned legal areas.
  • Translate for clients who speak a different language, if applicable.
  • Report caseload statistics and activities to supervisors regularly.
  • Travel to administrative agencies as required for case responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree and paralegal certification preferred.
  • Prior legal services or public interest experience preferred.
  • Detail-oriented and organized with strong self-motivation.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to interact professionally with individuals at all levels.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer skills.
  • Ability to work independently and maintain client confidentiality.
  • Fluency in Spanish, both verbal and written, preferred.
  • Ability to engage in occasional work-related travel.
