About the position

The Sustainability Paralegal at the New York City Department of Buildings plays a crucial role in supporting the enforcement of the city's climate policies, particularly Local Law 97, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from large buildings. This position involves case management, legal research, and collaboration with the Sustainability Bureau to ensure compliance and promote effective enforcement of sustainability initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting with case management throughout the legal process and maintaining a caseload.
  • Performing routine legal research and summaries, drafting legal communications for review by higher-level staff.
  • Preparing legal documents from templates for filing or serving upon interested parties.
  • Assisting attorneys with trial preparation.
  • Obtaining, reviewing, updating, and maintaining physical and/or electronic files.
  • Working with Sustainability Bureau staff to promote effective enforcement and compliance.
  • Completing special projects and assignments as needed.
  • Performing routine administrative duties, including photocopying, filing, and scanning.

Requirements

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and one year of full-time satisfactory experience in paralegal services, or a Paralegal Certification from an accredited program.
  • An associate degree or completion of 60 semester credits from an accredited college and three years of full-time experience in paralegal services.
  • A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and five years of full-time satisfactory experience in paralegal services.
