About the position

The Paralegal position in the Custer County Attorney's Office involves assisting the County Attorney and Deputy County Attorney with legal research, trial preparation, and the preparation of legal documents. The role requires a strong understanding of legal principles, attention to detail, and the ability to handle sensitive information while maintaining confidentiality. The Paralegal will engage in various legal tasks, including drafting court documents, coordinating with law enforcement, and managing case files, all while ensuring compliance with legal standards and deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Assist County Attorney in legal research and trial preparation.
  • Prepare and compose legal documents including charging documents, motions, and subpoenas.
  • Open and manage court files for criminal, civil, and other legal matters.
  • Communicate with law enforcement, opposing counsel, and other legal entities regarding cases.
  • Conduct investigations and gather evidence relevant to cases.
  • Draft court documents for various legal proceedings including involuntary mental commitments and guardianships.
  • Coordinate court appearances and notify victims and witnesses of changes in cases.
  • Maintain office calendar and track deadlines for legal documents and court appearances.
  • Prepare exhibits and trial notebooks for court hearings.
  • Attend court hearings and assist in trial preparation.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of legal terminology and procedures.
  • Experience with legal research and document preparation.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Familiarity with Montana Code Annotated and legal citation formats.
  • Proficiency in word processing software and legal tracking systems.
  • Ability to manage sensitive information and maintain confidentiality.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize workload.
