About the position

CGS is seeking a Paralegal to process electronic legal instruments, assist with trial preparation and hearings, and provide additional legal support for a large federal agency. This full-time, mid-level position is crucial in helping the government tackle its most dynamic challenges through innovative solutions. The role involves reviewing financial assets and transactions, analyzing information provided by debtors, and initiating contact to negotiate payment schedules. The Paralegal will also be responsible for reviewing and analyzing claims for legal merit, preparing necessary documentation, and providing legal support to Assistant U.S. Attorneys (AUSAs) in financial litigation matters. In this position, the Paralegal will independently perform functions to collect amounts imposed as a result of criminal prosecutions, including fines, assessments, and restitution. The role requires a thorough understanding of the Federal Debt Collection Procedures Act and the ability to prepare letters to referring agencies, analyze claims, and maintain accurate debtor records. The Paralegal will work closely with supervisors and AUSAs to make recommendations regarding settlements and post-judgment remedies, ensuring that all legal actions are documented appropriately. The position also involves conducting research using various legal databases and preparing a variety of legal documents, such as complaints, pleadings, and judgments. Responsibilities

  • Process electronic legal instruments and assist with trial preparation and hearings.
  • Review financial assets and transactions, providing comparative analyses of information from debtors.
  • Initiate contact with debtors regarding payment obligations and negotiate payment schedules.
  • Conduct skip tracing activities to locate debtors when necessary.
  • Review and analyze claims for legal merit and compliance with the Federal Debt Collection Procedures Act.
  • Prepare letters to referring agencies acknowledging receipt of claims and return deficient claims with explanations.
  • Evaluate debt collection documents for mathematical accuracy and verify payment transactions against court records.
  • Work closely with supervisors or AUSAs to make recommendations on settlements and post-judgment remedies.
  • Prepare legal documents such as complaints, pleadings, and judgments for financial litigation matters.
  • Conduct research using legal and non-legal databases to gather information for AUSAs.

Requirements

  • At least two years of litigation paralegal experience required.
  • Experience in civil practice, including discovery support or financial collection experience is very helpful.
  • At least one year of experience in automated litigation support.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with electronic legal instruments and trial preparation.
  • Familiarity with the Federal Debt Collection Procedures Act.
