About the position

The Paralegal position at Travelers is a full-time role that offers a hybrid work environment, allowing employees to work both remotely and on-site in West Des Moines, IA. This position is integral to the legal team, performing a variety of routine paralegal duties while demonstrating a solid understanding of legal issues. The successful candidate will assist attorneys and other legal professionals in preparing cases and managing files for standard legal matters. This includes conducting routine to moderate legal research, drafting legal documents, and analyzing relevant information from various sources. The role requires a proactive approach to legal case preparation, ensuring that all necessary documentation is organized and accessible for legal proceedings. In this position, the paralegal will be responsible for compiling and drafting legal documents for attorney review, which may include discovery responses, affidavits, and other routine legal documents. The paralegal may also assist attorneys in preparing witnesses for depositions and trials, preparing exhibits, and conducting routine investigations, including interviews as needed. Coordination between multiple parties involved in litigation is essential, as is the ability to utilize technology effectively to respond to discovery requests. The paralegal will also be tasked with capturing billable time and ensuring compliance with company policies and procedures. The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor's Degree, with a preference for those who have paralegal or litigation experience, particularly in the insurance sector. A working knowledge of medical terminology and proficiency in legal research software, such as Westlaw and Pacer, is also preferred. Strong interpersonal, grammar, and writing skills are essential, along with the ability to work independently and manage time effectively. The position requires a minimum of two years of paralegal experience or equivalent education and experience, including a Paralegal Certificate from an ABA-Certified program.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct basic legal research and analyze to prepare legal documents.
  • Assist with projects as requested.
  • Compile and draft legal documents for review and use by attorneys, such as routine documents, discovery responses, and affidavits.
  • Assist attorneys in preparation of witnesses for deposition and/or trial with general matters.
  • Prepare exhibits and other demonstrative evidence.
  • Categorize and interpret data; review and analyze reports, responses, and records.
  • Conduct routine investigations including interviews as needed and directed.
  • Coordinate requests between multiple parties involved in litigation.
  • Identify and select subject matter experts and provide instruction on areas to address.
  • Prepare and publish legal holds.
  • Prepare case summaries and/or case analysis reports.
  • Subpoena records.
  • Coordinate with Document Management to obtain underwriting files and certified policies.
  • Review and process bills for payment.
  • Capture time and record billable time in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Utilize technology to respond efficiently to discovery requests.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree preferred.
  • A minimum of 2 years' experience as a paralegal or related work experience; or an Associate/Bachelor's Degree or Paralegal Certification from an ABA-Certified program and one year of paralegal or related work experience.
  • Paralegal or litigation/claim experience preferred.
  • Insurance related experience preferred.
  • Working knowledge of Medical Terminology.
  • Proficient in use of legal research software (e.g. Westlaw, Pacer); Microsoft Office and PDF Software.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills.
  • Advanced grammar and writing skills.
  • Intermediate knowledge of general law office procedures and local court/jurisdiction rules and procedures.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Ability to manage time and tasks effectively.
  • Intermediate research and analytical skills.
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office and online research such as Westlaw and LexisNexis.
  • Ability to learn proprietary software systems.
  • Paralegal Certificate from an ABA-Certified program.
