About the position

Nicholas J. Ryan & Associates, the in-house counsel for State Farm Insurance Companies, is seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable paralegal to join our Bodily Injury/Uninsured Motorist (BI/UM) team. This position is based in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, where we maintain an active and busy civil trial practice. As a paralegal, you will play a crucial role in supporting our attorneys by managing case files, assisting with discovery, and preparing for trial. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of insurance defense discovery procedures and litigation processes, as well as familiarity with local court rules. This role requires excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong technological proficiency, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, paperless environment where time-sensitive work is the norm. In this position, you will be expected to utilize your knowledge of civil procedure to draft routine pleadings, discovery requests, motions, and other legal documents as assigned by attorneys. You will also assist in the collection and review of medical records, leveraging your understanding of medical terminology and typical injuries. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to develop skills in trial presentation technology, which will aid in trial preparation and presentation. Responsibilities

  • Assist attorneys with file handling using knowledge of discovery and litigation processes.
  • Draft routine pleadings, discovery requests, motions, and other legal documents as assigned by attorneys.
  • Collect and review medical records, utilizing understanding of medical terminology and typical injuries.
  • Develop skills in trial presentation technology to assist attorneys in trial preparation and presentation.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor while working in a team-oriented environment.

Requirements

  • Prior litigation or paralegal experience is required.
  • A paralegal degree, certificate, or certification is necessary.
  • Medical training or relevant coursework in legal studies is preferred.
  • 3+ years of paralegal discovery and trial experience, preferably in Insurance Defense.
  • Basic knowledge of discovery and litigation processes in the state of operation.
  • Basic understanding of civil procedure.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in plaintiff's personal injury cases will be considered.
