About the position

The Paralegal position at Travelers Insurance involves performing a variety of routine paralegal duties while possessing a solid understanding of routine legal issues. The role is essential in assisting attorneys and other legal professionals in the preparation of legal cases and managing files for standard matters. This includes conducting routine to moderate legal research, drafting legal documents, and obtaining, reviewing, summarizing, and analyzing relevant documents, reports, records, and other sources of information. The ideal candidate will be involved in various tasks that support the legal team and contribute to the overall efficiency of legal operations. In this role, the paralegal may conduct basic legal research and analyze information to prepare legal documents. Responsibilities include compiling and drafting legal documents for attorney review, assisting in the preparation of witnesses for depositions or trials, and preparing exhibits and demonstrative evidence. The paralegal will categorize and interpret data, review and analyze reports, and conduct routine investigations, including interviews as needed. Coordination between multiple parties involved in litigation is also a key aspect of the job, along with identifying and selecting subject matter experts to provide necessary instructions. Additional duties may include preparing legal holds, case summaries, and analysis reports, subpoenaing records, and coordinating with Document Management to obtain underwriting files and certified policies. The paralegal will also be responsible for reviewing and processing bills for payment, capturing time, and recording billable hours in accordance with company policies. Utilizing technology to respond efficiently to discovery requests is another critical function of this position, along with performing other assigned duties as necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct basic legal research and analyze information to prepare legal documents.
  • Assist with projects as requested.
  • Compile and draft legal documents for review and use by attorneys, such as routine documents, discovery responses, and affidavits.
  • Assist attorneys in the preparation of witnesses for depositions and/or trials.
  • Prepare exhibits and other demonstrative evidence.
  • Categorize and interpret data; review and analyze reports, responses, and records.
  • Conduct routine investigations, including interviews as needed and directed.
  • Coordinate requests between multiple parties involved in litigation.
  • Identify and select subject matter experts and provide instruction on areas to address.
  • Prepare and publish legal holds.
  • Prepare case summaries and/or case analysis reports.
  • Subpoena records.
  • Coordinate with Document Management to obtain underwriting files and certified policies.
  • Review and process bills for payment.
  • Capture time and record billable time in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Utilize technology to respond efficiently to discovery requests.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree preferred.
  • Paralegal or litigation/claim experience preferred.
  • Insurance related experience preferred.
  • Working knowledge of Medical Terminology.
  • Proficient in use of legal research software (e.g. Westlaw, Pacer); Microsoft Office and PDF Software.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills.
  • Advanced grammar and writing skills.
  • Intermediate knowledge of general law office procedures and local court/jurisdiction rules and procedures.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Ability to manage time and tasks effectively.
  • Intermediate research and analytical skills.
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office and online research such as Westlaw and LexisNexis.
  • Ability to learn proprietary software systems.
  • Paralegal Certificate from an ABA-Certified program.
  • A minimum of 2 years' experience as a paralegal or related work experience; or an Associate/Bachelor's Degree or Paralegal Certification from an ABA-Certified program and one year of paralegal or related work experience.
