About the position

The Executive Ethics Commission of the State of Illinois is seeking a Paralegal to assist attorneys and the Senior Paralegal by providing clerical and research support services. This role is essential in promoting ethics in public service and ensuring compliance with the State Officials and Employee Ethics Act. The Paralegal will be responsible for document preparation, organization of files, project tracking, and legal research, contributing to the overall efficiency and integrity of the Commission's operations.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares, organizes, stores, and retrieves case files and documents.
  • Meets with attorneys and other professionals to discuss assigned cases or projects.
  • Drafts legal documents as directed by legal staff.
  • Researches statutes, legislation, regulations, legal articles, judicial decisions, and other legal sources.
  • Assists attorneys with cases and meeting preparation, which may include attending hearings or meetings.
  • Develops and maintains records regarding the tracking of legal documents, projects, and reportables.
  • Facilitates the OEIG investigative summary report publication process including intake, assignment, tracking progress, storing documentation, redactions, and submissions until completion.
  • Assists attorneys by creating deadlines, reminders, and following up as needed.
  • Assists FOIA Officer with intake, storing, and responding to FOIA requests.
  • Assists Record Retention Officer with intake, storing, and responsibilities.
  • Monitors legal staff email inbox and other EEC inboxes as needed.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in Paralegal Studies or related field or equivalent experience
  • 3+ years of Paralegal or equivalent experience
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Understanding of legal language and principles, research methods, court pleadings and processes, and other related matters
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, and to exercise discretion and good judgment
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software

Nice-to-haves

  • Paralegal certificate preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in Paralegal Studies or related field
  • Working knowledge of the functions of state government and the character of relationships between the branches of State government, among State agencies and officers, and between the State and other levels of government
  • Demonstrated interest in, enthusiasm for, and commitment to public service
