The Paralegal position at the City of Baytown is a full-time role that plays a crucial part in supporting the City's attorneys, particularly in the area of litigation. The primary responsibilities include assisting with both criminal and civil litigation support, conducting legal research, drafting various legal documents such as pleadings, motions, and orders, and preparing evidence for court proceedings. The role also encompasses general paralegal duties that are essential for the day-to-day operations of the legal department, which handles municipal court prosecutions, civil service matters, administrative hearings, labor negotiations, and general counsel services. In addition to litigation support, the Paralegal will be responsible for managing assigned case files, which includes opening, organizing, archiving, tracking, and closing matter files. The individual will need to properly process and log all project-related information, ensuring that all documents are numbered and access is logged. Interaction with various City departments is essential to gather accurate and comprehensive information for discovery and project-related matters. The Paralegal will also prepare administrative, pre-trial, trial, and other relevant litigation documentation necessary for the attorneys, and maintain a calendaring system to track court and hearing dates. Administrative duties are also a significant part of this role, including tasks such as faxing, emailing, answering phones, and proofreading legal documents. The Paralegal must complete legal research and documentation in a timely and accurate manner for attorney review and approval. The position may also require the individual to perform other job-related duties as assigned, demonstrating flexibility and a willingness to support the legal team in various capacities.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the City's attorneys with litigation support for criminal and civil cases.
  • Conduct legal research and draft pleadings, motions, and orders.
  • Prepare evidence and other litigation-related documents.
  • Open, organize, archive, track, and close assigned case files.
  • Process, log, and organize all project-related information.
  • Provide attorneys with necessary materials and manage resources for legal projects.
  • Interact with City departments to obtain accurate information for discovery and project-related matters.
  • Prepare administrative, pre-trial, trial, and other relevant litigation documentation.
  • Maintain a calendaring system to track court and hearing dates.
  • Prepare assigned ordinances and resolutions for City Council meetings.
  • Handle administrative duties such as faxing, emailing, and answering phones.
  • Timely complete legal research and documents for attorney review.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Two years of experience in a paraprofessional Paralegal role in Texas (completion of a Paralegal program or a Bachelor's Degree may substitute for this requirement).
  • Exceptional proofreading and formatting skills with superior knowledge of grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
  • Ability to read and comprehend municipal charter documents, personnel policies, statutes, and rules associated with city government.
  • An equivalent combination of education, experience, certification, and/or licenses sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
